Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 9:45 am PDT on May 18, 2008

... Hot weather expected to continue across interior sections through
   Monday...

... Significant cooling with potential for strong winds Tuesday night
   into Wednesday...

A strong upper level high pressure system centered off the California
coast combined with weak flow near the surface will continue to bring
near record high temperatures today... with warmest Valley... Mountain...
and desert locations topping 100 degrees. Even inland areas of the
coastal plain will climb well into the 90s once again today... including
downtown Los Angeles. A gradual increase in onshore flow on Monday
will bring some cooling to coastal and valley areas... but mountain
and desert areas will see little relief from the current heat wave.

An upper level low pressure system will move into northern California
on Tuesday... bringing a significant increase in onshore flow and
cooler temperatures to all of Southern California. This weather system
is expected to strengthen as it dives into the southern Great Basin
bringing the potential for a strong wind event and much cooler conditions
Tuesday night into Wednesday across much of southern and central
California. At this time... it appears the strongest winds will be focused
across the Santa Barbara County mountains and adjacent passes and canyons
of the South Coast... as well as the Antelope Valley and Interstate 5
corridor of the Los Angeles County mountains. If this weather system
continues to evolve as expected... a high wind watch will likely be required
for all of these locations... as there is certainly the potential for wind
gusts to 60 mph.

People planning outdoor activities today and Monday should
take into consideration the unseasonably hot temperatures and adjust
your activities accordingly. Wear loose fitting light weight
clothing and drink plenty of water. Take advantage of shade and air
conditioning if available.

Never... ever leave children... the elderly or pets in enclosed
automobiles... even for the shortest time. Temperatures quickly
rise to life-threatening levels... even if the windows are
partially opened.
